You don't have to be a comic book geek or Superman buff to enjoy this 1996 animated series from the creators of Batman: The Animated Series. While not as boldly stylistic as its Emmy Award-winning predecessor, Superman does take to heart the counsel that the Man of Steel receives early on: "Remember the legacy you carry." The epic three-part "The Last Son of Krypton," which launched the series, faithfully retells perhaps the most famous of superhero origin stories. Notable twists here include placing Brainiac on the planet Krypton and a Superman who is a bit more vulnerable than previous film and television incarnations. By the character's very nature, Superman is a far lighter and less foreboding series than Batman, and it boasts smart writing to support its iconic characters. Superman, voiced by Wings star Timothy Daly, dispatches villains and one-liners with equal aplomb. This two-disc set contains all the episodes from Season 1, as well as several from Season 2. Four episodes -- the first part of "The Last Son," "Stolen Memories," "The Main Man, Part Two," and "Tools of the Trade" -- receive dense and entertaining commentaries by several of the series' producers, directors, and writers, who helpfully point out design flourishes, character profiles, and in-jokes, such as the fleeting glimpse in "Stolen Memories" of a truck based on the Batmobile from Batman: The Animated Series. One segment, "Building the Mythology: Superman's Supporting Cast," showcases the pivotal characters in the Superman universe and explores how this series tweaked the comic book archetypes.
