What are Superfriends for? How about saving Aquaman's underwater kingdom of Atlantis and clearing the falsely accused Green Lantern's name, for starters. This collection contains a pair of two-part episodes from the Emmy-nominated Cartoon Network series that reunites the 1970s-vintage D.C. Comics super-group of costumed crime fighters -- Batman, Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawk Girl, and Martian Manhunter. In "In Blackest Night," the Justice League (minus Batman and Wonder Woman) races against time to defend Green Lantern, who is on trial for destroying a planet. And our heroes make waves in "The Enemy Below," wherein the very buff Aquaman is usurped in a coup by his brother. This series boasts thrilling animation, thoughtful contemporary interpretations of these iconic characters, smart writing (how Green Lantern's accusers solved their "lawyer problem" is particularly amusing), and deft voice work (Michael Rosenbaum's Kevin Spacey-esque Deadshot). Some of the action packs a primal punch and may be too intense for younger viewers: At one point, for instance, Aquaman is forced to sever his own hand (offscreen, thankfully) to save his son's life. Our verdict: This series does the erstwhile Superfriends justice.
